The solution needed to be LoW VOC / Non Hazardous and easily applied to the surfaces. In addition, there were specific heritage colour requirements and the need to be able to withstand long-term exposure in an extremely tough environment.
The Fireshell F1E system is the only extreme duty, self-priming, flexible, water-based, Low VOC intumescent capable of meeting all the requirements of this project. The system was spray applied to over 11,000m2 of timber surfaces.
The Fireshell F1E technology provided a perfect solution for a very complex scope. The risks were successfully mitigated with an efficient, safe and high-performance ignition barrier solution. One of Australia’s biggest and most famous landmarks is now EXFIRE protected with a reduced risk of ignition and flame spread.
Sydney Trains (TfNSW) has been using Fireshell F1E on our large scale infrastructure projects since 2014. Fireshell F1E has proven to be the optimal solution for the Sydney Harbour Bridge deck upgrade project.
It satisfies our primary purpose of providing unparalleled fire resistive properties to our historic timber decking whilst also being easy to work with, has a long shelf life and allows for various application methods such as spray or brush / roller application that help us meet our environmental containment needs. Furthermore, it requires minimal safety controls, is readily available with anti-slip grit for ground surface coating purposes and has been approved for use on some of our heritage structures. The paint we first applied six years ago has been exposed to the elements up to today and still maintains its integrity.
